Do you provide historical observations?

Yes. The historical data we provide come from reanalyses, the ERA5 and ERA5-Land datasets of the Copernicus Climate Change Service. A reanalysis rebuilds past weather from observations and a weather model on a regular grid, so practitioners use it as “observations”, including where weather stations are scarce. See Reanalysis for how it works and how ERA5 and ERA5-Land differ.

What we provide

• Sources: ERA5 (0.25°, about 30 km) and ERA5-Land (0.1°, about 9 km).
• Period: from 1981 to the present.
• Variables: daily precipitation, mean, minimum and maximum temperature, relative humidity and wind speed; other variables on request.
• Delivery: as for our projections: daily values or means over any period, from sites to the global grid, in NetCDF, CSV, GeoTIFF or shapefile (see Data processing).

ERA5-Land is also the reference of our climate projections, so the historical data and the projections line up on the same 0.1° grid.
